Bill Riegel Park Improvements Starting Soon

Post Date:07/14/2022 9:46 AM

Construction is set to begin in Bill Riegel Park on Monday, July 25th, 2022. The project will complete the development of the park by installing the following features:

  • A playground with equipment appropriate for school-aged children.
  • A shelter for picnicking and neighborhood gatherings.
  • New paved path around the park.
  • Installation of picnic tables, benches, and bike rack.
  • Irrigation system upgrades.

Please use caution when around the park, be aware and follow the traffic control measures, and avoid the fenced work area. The park will be closed through the end of October 2022. The project is funded with Park System Development Charges.

Bill Riegel Park is a four-acre, neighborhood park located in southeast Salem at 4567 Campbell Drive SE. The park and the approximately 1,300 nearby residents are bounded by State-Highway 22, Cordon Road SE, and Lancaster Drive SE. These physical barriers restrict foot and bike travel to other parks, making this project a high priority as the City works to provide close-to-home recreation opportunities for all residents.

The first phase of park development was completed in 2012, with funding from an Oregon Park and Recreation Department grant. The initial improvements included a walking path, a 2-5-year-old age-appropriate playground, open play area, drinking fountain, and a tree buffer located adjacent to State-Highway 22. Later in 2012, neighborhood donations were matched with a City grant to construct a three-point basketball court. In 2019, the City partnered with Friends of Trees to plant an 50 additional trees on the site.

Bill Riegel Park is named after a former member of the Salem City Council. Mr. Riegel served on City Council from January 1991 through December 1994.
