Salem Public Library invites you to bring in items to be added to a community ofrenda during the month of October. A collection box will be available at the Greeter Desk inside the front doors of the library. A few things to know:

• Only artificial flowers will be included.
• Candles must be LED or will be displayed, but left unlit.
• Breads and fruits must be plastic or wax.
• Items will not be returned.

Day of the Dead (Día de los Muertos) is a holiday celebrated throughout Latin America between October 31-November 2 during which families remember loved ones who have passed.

Its origins began with the indigenous towns in the Americas more than 3,000 years ago when the Olmecs, and then the Toltecs, Mixtecs, Zapotecs, Maya, and the Aztecs would honor death.

One of the essential components of celebrating the Day of the Dead is the altar (ofrenda) which is decorated with photos of passed loved ones. The Day of the Dead recognizes the relationship between life and death. During these days it is believed the spirits of the dead return home to spend time with their loved ones. In order for the spirits to find their way back home, the families build an altar in their honor and welcome them. The altars are different in every culture, but the main components are yellow marigolds (cempazúchitl), candles, photos of family members who’ve passed, papel picado (tissue paper designs) and food and drink that they liked. The altars are a way for the living family members to honor their loved ones who are no longer here.

La Biblioteca Pública de Salem los invita a traer artículos de ofrenda para el altar comunitario durante el mes de octubre. Habrá una caja de colección disponible en el escritorio al entrar las puertas principales de la biblioteca. Algunas cosas que debe saber:

El Día de los Muertos es un día festivo en donde familias recuerdan a sus seres queridos que han fallecido. Se celebra en Latinoamérica entre el 31 de octubre hasta el 2 de noviembre.

Sus orígenes comenzaron con los pueblos indígenas de América, hace más de 3,000 años, cuando los Olmecas, y después los Toltecas, Mixtecas, Zapotecas, Mayas y Aztecas honraban la muerte.

Uno de los componentes esenciales de la celebración del día de los muertos es la ofrenda o el altar que están decorados con fotos de seres queridos fallecidos. El día de los muertos reconoce la relación entre la vida y la muerte. Durante estos días se cree que los espíritus de los muertos regresan a casa para pasar tiempo con sus familiares. Para que los espíritus puedan encontrar el camino a casa, las familias les preparan altares u ofrendas en su honor y para darles la bienvenida. Las ofrendas son diferentes en cada cultura, pero por su mayoría incluyen cempazúchitl, velas, fotos de los fallecidos, papel picado y también comida y bebida que les gustaban. Los altares/ofrendas son una forma para que los familiares vivientes honren a sus seres queridos que ya no están aquí.
