Saturday night shooting becomes a homicide investigation

Suspect in custody

Salem Police Violent Crimes Unit detectives arrested Michael Ray Solis, age 19, in connection with the July 1 death of Steven Michael Hill.

Solis was arraigned today by the Marion County District Attorney’s Office (MCDA) for second-degree murder and other weapons-related charges.

Salem, Ore. — Detectives from the Violent Crimes Unit are working all available leads in a shooting incident which left a 34-year-old man dead.

The investigation began at approximately 7:00 p.m. on July 1 when Salem Police officers were dispatched to the intersection of 17th ST and Silverton RD NE on the call of a man with a gunshot wound. Passersby and officers assisted in providing medical aid to the victim; however, paramedics pronounced him deceased a short time later.

The victim is identified as Steven Michael Hill.

Eastbound traffic on Silverton RD was closed for several hours during the investigation of the crime scene.

No suspects have been arrested in the incident; however, the incident remains an active investigation. Anyone with information about this incident is asked to call the Salem Police Tips Line at 503-588-8477.
