River Road South is Reopened to All Traffic

Post Date:01/31/2024 7:00 PM

River Road South will reopen starting Thursday, February 1, 2024, with one lane of traffic. Beginning Thursday morning, flaggers will allow alternating two-way traffic for north and southbound vehicles, using the southbound lane. Traffic congestion may be present on River Road S during this time and continued use of alternate routes may be advised. The full opening of River Road S is expected Thursday afternoon in time for the evening commute.

On Sunday, January 28, a rockslide blocked travel lanes on River Road S.  River Road S has remained closed to vehicles, bicycles, and pedestrians while City of Salem staff and contractors worked to dislodge and remove a considerable amount of loose and unstable rock from the hillside. All cleanup activities are expected to be complete Thursday afternoon.

The City of Salem would like to thank the community for their patience and understanding as we complete the necessary work to reopen River Road S safely. Although the hillside is considered stable, the dangers of falling rocks in the area will remain until permanent solutions are identified and funded. Please remember to drive carefully, control your speed, and maintain adequate stopping distances in case of emergencies.
