Measuring Greenhouse Gas Emissions Seen as Very Important

Post Date:11/20/2018

It is very important, if not, critical that Salem's greenhouse gas emissions be measured. That is according to the results of the fourth Our Salem survey question.

More than 235 people answered the multiple-choice question: 'How important is it to measure Salem's greenhouse gas emissions?' More than 45 percent of respondents answered 'critical,' while 23 percent said 'very important.' Roughly 22 percent did not think it was important at all.

The City is asking the community questions online every two weeks as part of the Our Salem project to update the Salem Area Comprehensive Plan. As part of the first phase of the project, the City is working with a consultant team to develop Salem's first greenhouse gas emissions inventory. The inventory is being incorporated into the first phase because the built environment ' buildings, related transportation networks, etc. ' affects greenhouse gas emissions, and the results of such an inventory can inform larger discussions about how and where Salem should grow in the future.

The greenhouse gas inventory is highlighted as an action in the 2018 Council Policy Agenda. The inventory is expected to be complete by June 2019 when the first phase of the Our Salem project is complete.
