Join the City Nature Challenge between April 26 and April 29. Get outside to explore and take pictures of plants and wildlife!

The City of Salem is partnering with Marion Soil & Water Conservation District to join the City Nature Challenge in April. You can be a citizen scientist and help gather biodiversity data that will be used by scientists around the world!

How it Works:

  1. Download iNaturalist for your phone from the Apple or Google Play app store.
  2. Create an account.
  3. During the challenge dates, April 26-29, join a City of Salem bioblitz event
    or
    Venture out to explore your local neighborhood or park and make observations on your own.
  4. Take pictures with your phone and upload them as observations on iNaturalist.

City of Salem Bioblitz Event Schedule:

Friday April 26

Owl Prowl and Insect Spotlighting, 7:45 p.m. – 9:45 p.m., Minto Brown Island Park, meet at the covered seating area by parking lot 3.

Saturday April 27

Native & Invasive Plants and Bird Watching, 10:00 a.m. – 12:00 p.m., Minto Brown Island Park, meet at the covered seating area by parking lot 3.

Riparian Plants & Birds, 10:00 a.m. – 12:00 p.m., Orchard Heights Park, meet at the bridge over Glenn Creek.

Prairie Habitat Plants & Birds, 12:00 p.m. – 2:00 p.m., Oak Savannah, meet in the Fire Station #11 parking lot.

Bees & Butterflies and Insects, 1:00 p.m. – 3:00 p.m., OSU Marion County Master Gardeners Demonstration Garden, behind the Marion County Health Building, look for the white fence.

Sunday April 28

Plant ID and Family Scavenger Hunt, 9:30 a.m. – 11:30 a.m., Englewood Park

Plant ID, 12:00 p.m. – 2:00 p.m., Bush Pasture Park

Monday April 29

Riparian Plants and Bird ID, 1:00 p.m. – 3:00 p.m., Bush Pasture Park, meet at the Leffelle St. parking lot.
