Our-Salem-Timeline

We heard you, Salem! The Our Salem Vision has been updated with your input, and you can now see it online.

The Vision depicts how the community wants the Salem area to grow and develop in the future through broad goals and a land use map. It is the result of more than a year and a half of community engagement.

The Vision goes to the Salem Planning Commission on February 9 for input, and then will be presented to the Salem City Council for acceptance on February 22. If it is accepted, the Vision will be used as the foundation of the future update to the Salem Comprehensive Plan

Why is the Our Salem Vision Important?

Salem is growing fast. Our area is expected to grow by almost 60,000 people between 2015 and 2035. The Vision will help us determine how to guide that growth, and how we meet the growing needs of our community for:

  • Housing

  • Jobs

  • Parks

  • Roads, bridges and walkways

  • Natural resources

  • Public services

Once the vision is accepted by the Council, work on the finer details will begin. This will include developing and revising Comprehensive Plan policies as well as Salem's zoning code and zoning map. Once all this work is done, the final plan will need to go through an adoption process before it takes effect, hopefully by the end of this year.

The big-picture vision: a livable, equitable, carbon-neutral city where everyone has access to affordable Salem is a livable, equitable, carbon neutral city where everyone has access to affordable housing and safe mobility choices, families and local businesses are thriving, diversity and culture is celebrated, and open spaces and the environment are valued and protected.
