Salem Ensures Safe Drinking Water Protected by the State-of-the-Art Treatment Processes, including Ozone

Post Date:06/12/2024 5:20 PM

The Geren Island Water Treatment Facility continues to safeguard Salem’s drinking water from cyanotoxins (Microcystin and Cylindrospermopsin) produced by algae in the Santiam River Watershed. Thanks to multiple investments in water treatment technologies including enhanced filtration systems, ozone treatment, and chlorination processes, Salem’s drinking water remains safe for all water customers.

Testing of the North Santiam River began in late April. On June 10th, 2024, results showed an increased level of microcystin, a type of cyanotoxin, in the Santiam River near the Geren Island Water Treatment Facilities main intake. This is the first occurrence of cyanotoxins at an elevated level since the Ozone Treatment Facility was commissioned in 2022. Treatment processes at the water treatment facility have successfully reduced microcystin levels in the treated drinking water that is supplied to the City of Salem’s customers. Results of tests for microcystin in treated drinking water are well below the minimum reporting levels and are considered non-detectable.

Ongoing Water Quality Monitoring

To ensure that the Salem community and all water users continue to enjoy safe and clean water, Salem’s Public Works staff will be testing the North Santiam River at the Geren Island Water Treatment Facility’s water intake and the treated drinking water daily. Test results will be posted on the City of  Salem at www.cityofsalem.net/water as soon as those results are available.

Salem’s Commitment to Water Safety

Including $20 million from the State of Oregon, Salem has invested over $80 million in a state-of-the-art Ozone Treatment Facility and slow-sand filter improvements to continue to deliver clean and abundant water to its customers. The Ozone Treatment Facility has been in full operation since 2022 and continually protects our drinking water 24 hours a day and 7 days a week from potential contaminants.

Updated information related to Salem’s water quality, including the 2024 Water Quality Report, can be found on the City of Salem website.
