To enhance traffic and pedestrian safety, the City of Salem announces Safer Streets, two user-friendly online tools to empower residents to propose new traffic calming measures and improved pedestrian crossings.

How residents can be involved

Traffic Calming Measures and the upgraded Pedestrian Crossings tool will allow community members to suggest areas and types of improvements. Using these tools, community members may voice their concerns.

How the program works

Submitting a pedestrian crossing safety concern or a traffic calming measure is easy through an online form and interactive city map. Residents can outline their concerns and a street location, which will then be added to the map and assigned to city staff for review. Examples of traffic calming measures include speed bumps or speed radar feedback signs. Upgraded pedestrian crossings may include median islands or flashing beacons.

Prioritizing safety for all

The city will prioritize projects and requests based on scoring criteria. Factors such as proximity to schools, parks, and transit stops, traffic volumes, and speed will be considered. Addressing the needs of underserved areas will also be a key consideration, reflecting the program's commitment to promoting inclusive safety enhancements.
