The Salem Police Department launched several initiatives in the interest of open communication, transparency, and trust-building. 

The first is our commitment to doing the necessary work to shift the paradigm of policing toward a new, deeper connection with residents while emphasizing relationships, collaboration, and trust-building. These actions are known as principled policing.

The Salem Police Department began to work toward creating its very first action-oriented strategic plan in 2021. The three-year framework represents our commitment to improve the way we serve our community. The goals, objectives, and strategies captured in the strategic plan provide focus for the department, ensuring the best use of our limited resources toward measurable progress.

In 2022, the Salem Police Department designed its first transparency portal. By openly sharing data, policies, reports, and other information that directly impacts the public, we strive to engage residents in knowledge-sharing, while demonstrating openness and accountability.
