Community Police Academy


Every April and September, the community is invited to participate in the Salem Police Department's Community Police Academy. The purpose of the program is to enhance understanding and communication between the community and the police through in-person classes about police services, programs, and procedures and policies. Classes are limited to 20 participants.

Topics

Some of the topics covered include:

  • Crime scene investigation
  • Emergency vehicle operations
  • Firearms training
  • K-9 Unit
  • Patrol and traffic control
  • Procedural justice
  • Recruitment
  • Scenario-based training

Time Commitment

  • Classes are every Wednesday evening from 6:00 p.m.–9:00 p.m.
  • The program is 14 weeks
  • Three all-day Saturday classes

To graduate, you cannot miss more than three scheduled sessions.

Applicant Requirements

 To participate in the academy, applicants must:

  • Be at least 18 years of age
  • Live or work within the Salem city limits
  • Possess a valid driver license
  • Submit to a criminal history check which should demonstrate
    • No misdemeanor arrests in the 12 months prior to the academy date
    • Have no felony convictions
