Salem Parks

The pride and joy of any town is the public park system. Salem boasts hidden gems located inside neighborhoods, larger community parks with reservable areas for weddings, reunions, company picnics, and athletic tournaments, plus special event parks for concerts, festivals, movies, and run/walk events. Salem is fortunate to have historical sites and park features not found anywhere this side of the Mississippi. Salem's thriving volunteer base works in tandem, contributing assistance to support these wonderful City resources.

Secor Park is an approximately 8.5-acre neighborhood park with a lush wooded area, gently sloping grass meadows, and an upper reach of Waln Creek. The park features a playground and paved and unpaved paths. Come for a walk or a respite, and enjoy the trees, birds, and year-round flow of Waln Creek.

In August 2019, Salem City Council adopted an updated master plan for Secor Park, and in 2020, the City completed the first phase of park improvements identified in the updated plan. These improvements include building a bridge across Waln Creek and installing a drinking fountain, paved paths, benches, and playground equipment. Updates were also made to the Rock Creek Drive S and Stockton Avenue S entryways to improve accessibility to the park. Funding for the first phase of development comes from Parks System Development Charges.

The community provided input for the updated plan through a series of public workshops and surveys, and the updated plan shares a similar overall vision with the park’s initial 1995 plan. New additions to the 2019 master plan include a community garden, drinking fountain, paved and mulched paths and habitat enhancements that include ensuring a 50-foot streamside buffer planted with native trees and shrubs, woodland restoration, and a pollinator garden.

The park is named after former south Salem resident, Ralph Secor in recognition of his partial donation of land that helped to establish the park in 1980.
