Use Your Library Card

You can borrow most Salem Public Library items for three weeks, and renew many items three additional times. You can use your library card at any Chemeketa Cooperative Regional Library System (CCRLS) member library. Use your card 24/7 from your internet-connected device to place items on hold, renew items, checkout digital items and access dozens of online resources.

Borrow Library Items

Use self-checkout machines or go to any checkout desk in the library to borrow books, magazines, CDs, DVDs, and more.

Most Salem Public Library items are loaned for three weeks. The due date for each item is displayed on your checkout receipt, and online at My Account.

If you sign up for email or text notifications with a staff member or online, you will be sent a courtesy reminder two days prior to an item's due date. You are responsible for returning items on time even if you do not receive a reminder notice.

Place Library Items on Hold

When an item you want to borrow is checked out by another patron, you can place a hold on the item. When an item on hold becomes available, you will be notified by email, text, or phone, depending on the preference set when you signed up for your account.

To place a hold:

  • Log into your account
  • Search for the item in the catalog.
  • Click the Place Hold button next to the desired item.
  • Choose a pick-up location for your hold.

Hold items are stored in a public area by last name for 7 days.

Renew Library Items

Items that do not have holds on them will automatically renew on your account. Most items renew for up to three additional checkout periods unless there is a waiting list.

Please make note of the updated due dates.

Return Library Items

You can return items:

  • Inside either library during all open hours.
  • 24/7 at the drive up book drop on the Liberty St. side of the main library.
  • At any CCRLS member library listed on the back of your card.
